On MONDAY, we will have an open-note quiz using your Text Structure Flip Notes to make sure you are able to identify the definitions and key words of various text structures. We'll work through Text Structure task cards throughout the rest of Monday and on Tuesday as well. (PERIOD 2: On Tuesday, you will be in study hall and will have a photo copy of 8 cards to work on.) Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday will take us into text structure rotation assignments which include:

Throughout this week, we'll be working on putting together our first TDA for "The Five-Second Rule" article which you read last week. The game plan is:

MONDAY: Analyze the prompt and re-read with a focus.
TUESDAY: Annotate the text and begin moving information to our organizer.
WEDNESDAY: Finish organizer.
THURSDAY: Begin final daft.

The packet is due for a grade on THURSDAY.  Thursday and Friday will take us into practicing analyzing the prompt for TDA responses.

Thursday will be spent putting together our TDA folders and Friday will be divided between organizing our folders and bins and doing some practice with the ACE writing strategy. ALL CORRECTIONS ARE DUE BY FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25. Because I will be out of the building on Monday, October 28, and Tuesday, October 29, there are NO exceptions.

(Yes, I know it is not a student day, but both assignments were given on Tuesday of last week.) On Tuesday, we will review the Frederick Douglass passage and review for our quiz. Wednesday, you'll take a 10-question quiz on individuals, events, and ideas, and Thursday and Friday will be spent reviewing for your unit test on Monday.

This week, our focus is on the Career Portfolio. The plan is as follows:
TUESDAY: Preliminary reflection; career research.

LANGUAGE ARTS 7:
Monday will be the final day for work on the Case of Stuart Smally. We'll present our findings at the end of class. On Tuesday, we will start our rotation work for analyzing interactions among ideas, events, and individuals in nonfiction text. Students will be working independently on Tuesday with an article about Frederick Douglass. On Wednesday and Thursday, students will be split into two groups, either working on the Study Island practice session, "Individuals, Events, and Ideas." Both the Frederick Douglass passage and the Study Island session are due by the end of the day (11:59 PM) on Thursday. Students will get grade reports on  Friday.

CAREER EXPLORATIONS:

Thursday will wrap-up our study of the career clusters by looking at human services. Friday, we'll introduce the Career Research Portfolio assignment and begin brainstorming our topics.

On Monday, we'll wrap up our rotation assignments in citing evidence to support inferences and generalizations. We will have a whole-class wrap-up on Tuesday with a quiz on Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday, we'll begin our third and final mini-unit in key ideas and details which will have us looking at how elements of nonfiction text affect each other.

CAREER EXPLORATIONS:
Monday and Tuesday of this week we will be working on a lesson plan assignment for the education career cluster. On Wednesday and Thursday, we will look at the marketing and business career clusters and get hands-on experience by creating a subscription box. Friday will take us into hospitality and tourism cluster and we will work on creating a three-day tour of Schuylkill County.

We got a little backed up this week, so this we'll begin working with citing evidence to support inferences and generalizations. Monday will be spent learning how to complete test and/or quiz corrections. The remainder of the week, we will be working in our four rotation assignments:

  2. Small Group: "Two Days with No Phone"
  3. Guided Instruction: "Man on the Moon"
  4. SSR: Make an inference or a generalization about your character and/or a subject in the text.
Plan on a citing evidence to support inferences and generalizations quiz on Wednesday, October 2.



CAREER EXPLORATIONS:
On Monday, we'll put Gold E. Locks on trial for breaking and entering at the Bears' home. This trial will continue into Tuesday. We'll take the second half of Tuesday's class to review the Human Services career cluster. Wednesday and Thursday will be spent looking at the government and public administration cluster where we will create our own constitution. Friday will introduce the education cluster with a guest speaker.

CAREER EXPLORATIONS:
On Monday, we'll review the STEM Career Cluster and spend the remainder of the class as well as Tuesday's class dabbling with computer programming use Code.org. Wednesday will take us into health services and we'll be doing some work with disease and injury diagnoses on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday we will focus on Law Enforcement and Public Safety with a few guest speakers before we enter into a trial next week.

This week, we will start working on our first big unit: Key Ideas and Details in Informational Text. We'll start off with central idea and objective summary. Monday will be a whole class review of central idea while working through rotations covering word grouping, relevancy, and order and sequence. Tuesday will be spent practicing writing objective summaries. The remainder of the week, we will be working in our four rotation assignments:

  1. Indepenent: Study Island for summarization practice

Tuesday and Wednesday will be spent in the architecture and construction cluster with a hands-on project completed in class in which students will be redesigning the blueprints for Knoebel's Haunted Mansion. Thursday and Friday will be spent in the manufacturing cluster with students working on designing a car with a culminating race on Friday.

LANGUAGE ARTS 7:
Students will take their baseline Study Island benchmark tests this week. This will give us a starting point to measure our growth throughout the year. The remainder of the week will be spent reviewing the concept of tracking the development of central ideas in nonfiction text and writing objective summaries.

CAREER EXPLORATIONS:
This week, students will begin looking at the sixteen career clusters with a focus on agriculture, arts, and transportation. In addition to understanding the pathways within the clusters, students will be participating in hands-on projects in which they design and market a new pizza product as well as create a new mode of transportation. All work will be done in class.

This week, we'll continue our work on our argumentative essay. Tuesday will be your final day for drafting. Wednesday and Thursday are designated writing days and Friday is the day for final revisions, edits, and submission. The essay assignment will be posted in Google Classroom.

As you examine your nonfiction texts, you will be reading through that lens, searching for evidence that will help strengthen your point. Monday through Thursday will be spent reading the texts, finding evidence, and analyzing the evidence. Friday will be spent beginning to draft your final essay.

This week, we are working on our Holocaust survivor websites. You will have four class days this week to work and the final project is due on MONDAY, APRIL 22. We will begin this week by completing our mid-year benchmark on Study Island. On Wednesday and Thursday, we will begin our next unit on craft and structure in informational text by focusing on author's purpose and point of view. On Wednesday, we will take notes and practice as a class. On Thursday, we will practice in stations. On Friday, 7th grade students will have Safe2Say Something in the morning and we will work through a nonfiction article identifying the central idea and supporting details during the remainder of the day. There will be no homework this week.
